Romans 8 - "Gonna Be Alright"

God is so good to provide what we need at the exact time we need it. Last night the song "Gonna Be Alright" came on the radio. Soon after I heard it I had a conversation with a friend who reminded me God already knows the outcome of my situation and 'it will be alright'! Wow, God! I love how He works through music, people, and Scripture to encouragement. When I walked in last night crying from another song on the radio, Doug was there to speak words of life over me. His hug and doting over me is priceless.

Everything's gonna be alright
Everything's gonna be alright
You hold me Your arms
Until my storm is calm

This is why I can not only survive the storms of life but glorify Him through them. The knowledge that "Everything's Gonna Be Alright" is with me. His peace is mine from the tip of my head to the tips of my toes. Yes, I still am emotional from time to time but He expects that because I am human. Yes, I still find my mind wandering with the 'What if?' questions but when I do it takes my faith deeper. I was asked last night how I can trust God so fully with all I am going through in my physical body. I am grateful people can see that trust. That makes me want to trust Him even more. When people ask such questions, they are pondering and that is a good thing. This morning I am basking on Romans 8:28. This is a verse I memorized as a child. I read it in different versions and settled in with The Passion Translation. So we are convinced that every detail of our lives is continually woven together for good, for we are His lovers who have been called to fulfill His designed purpose. Woo hoo! Yes, God! He has called me as His servant to preach the Gospel and love with His love. I will admit there are times I ask Him, 'Why me? Why do I have to go through another thing on this earth?' Those are questions every human asks of Him. I think of my Daddy who went through multiple times of cancer, over sixty surgeries in his lifetime, a gunshot wound, a broken neck from getting hit by a train...oh my! All of these things took his faith and trust in God deeper. I can hear his words now as I reflect back on his life. 'Now Sheila Babe you cannot allow MS or anything else keep you down. You are a McHenry. That means you are a fighter and you don't give up.' I miss the encouragement my Daddy and Momma spoke over me. It makes me strive to speak life over people every chance I get. Last night Pamela reminded me God knew everything about me even before I was born. These words came back to me as I read the beginning of Romans 8:29. For he knew all about us before we were born and he destined us from the beginning to share the likeness of his Son. Woo hoo! Romans 8 continues with Paul writing of God's love being poured out over us. All we have to do is allow Him to do so. Oh how I pray for more people to do so. Verses thirty-eight and thirty-nine reads in The Passion Translation:

So now I live with the confidence that there is nothing in the universe with the power to separate us from God’s love. I’m convinced that his love will triumph over death, life’s troubles, fallen angels, or dark rulers in the heavens. There is nothing in our present or future circumstances that can weaken his love. There is no power above us or beneath us—no power that could ever be found in the universe that can distance us from God’s passionate love, which is lavished upon us through our Lord Jesus, the Anointed One!

Joshua 1:9; Philippians 4:13; II Timothy 1:7; Proverbs 3:5-6 - "Heaven Help Me"

Last night in Bible study we were studying John 11. This chapter has the story of Lazarus. Mary and Martha believed yet had doubts. They blamed Jesus for their brother dying saying if He would have been there he wouldn't have died. We talked about how it is human to have doubts and the Lord understands our doubts. It doesn't mean He likes them but He understands them. I woke this morning with the thought, 'Four more days.' I am not one to wish my life away but I will be glad when Monday's appointment gets here. I was thinking about what I desire from that appointment. Answers. A game plan of action. Could God give those now? Of course He can but as of right now He has us in this 'waiting room' for a reason. I truly believe that reason is for Him to be glorified through us. How do we handle days like yesterday where I was in bed all afternoon? How do we handle the nausea not getting much relief from the medicine prescribed? How do we handle the stress in our home right now? The way we accomplish each one of these things will determine if He is glorified or if the enemy is given an open door into our lives. I was so disappointed when I tried to go for a walk yesterday and only made it a few blocks. I was disappointed with sleeping so much yesterday. But the thing I was not disappointed in was the encouragement I received last night when our small group met together. One said so many times she finds herself saying, 'Help me!' to the Lord when she feels like she doesn't know what to do. This morning the song "Heaven Help Me" is on my mind and encouraging me to cry out to Him when I feel like I'm at the end of my rope.

When I don't understand
When I don't I think I can
I know You have a plan
Heaven help me
Heaven help me
Help me, help me
'Cause I can't walk this road alone
And I can't do this on my own
Tell me, tell me
I just need to hear You say
That everything will be okay

Yes! He is there to help us every single moment of every single day. He is there to empower us to stand strong when the enemy comes knocking at our door. He is there when life seems to be crumbling around us whether it be a physical issue, a breakdown in a relationship, an emotional break-down, etc. I am so grateful for the promises in His Word that encourage me to lean into Him. These promises are not only for 'tough' days but for 'good' ones too. They are for the disappointing days when we feel like we can't go on. We do not have to fear anything but instead need to allow God to empower us through whatever comes our way (II Timothy 1:7). We do not have to do anything on our own strength but instead need to lean into His strength (Philippians 4:13). We do not have to make any decision on our own but instead need to trust Him with aspect of life (Proverbs 3:5-6). We do not have to fight any battles alone but instead need to bask in the knowledge He is with us everywhere we go (Joshua 1:9). This picture of my Daddy and I was taken when I was in high school. It's one I treasure greatly. My earthly Daddy loved me so much and showered me with his love. He lived a life pouring out God's love on all he met. I strive to be like him and my Momma to live out a great faith so God's love can pour out of me too.

Dear Jesus, Thank You for bringing Doug into my life! I am so grateful for all he does for me especially in this 'waiting room' we are in right now. Thank You for Amy, Andy, and Ms Carol who encouraged me greatly last night! Thank You for there only being four more days until my appointment at MUSC! Cleanse me so You can fill me so people will see/hear You through my words, actions, attitude, and thoughts. I pray Your strength over many in 'waiting rooms' in life. May they find Your strength. My sisters Linda, Sally, and Mary; my brother Richard; Ben and Colleen; Pete and Delores; Steve; Doug's sister Jackie; Cait; Rhonda; Mike; Norma Hall; Jack and Paula; Beth; Sharon Sebolt and her parents; some young ladies with anxiety; Brooklyn; April; families in turmoil; Gay and Doug; Sherry; and many others. I also pray healing prayers over many dealing with ‘c’ and/or going through treatments…Chrissy’s cousin; Mike's sister; Shirley Jones; Little Judson; Little Roselynn; a young girl in our community; Audrey; Mr Mullet; Marybeth's friend; David; Dave and Carol with his treatments; Dan; and Ray. I pray for: the Long family; Becky; Baby Sabre and her family; Debbie and her family; Mr. John; Darrell; and Russ. Thank You for continued healing for Pastor Tommy and Pam! Thank You for being My Help! Amen.

Romans 12:9-12 - "Gratitude"

Some days are so much harder than others. Seeing people in physical pain hurts my heart but when they do not have the hope of the Lord it really hurts. If they would only realize God's love, their hurts may not necessarily lessen but they would be easier to get through. Once again this morning the Lord has Romans 12:12 on my heart. The Lord has me pondering upon Paul's words from verse nine through verse twelve from The Passion Translation. This section of Scripture is entitled "Transformed Relationships." Paul encourages us in verse nine to love one another at all time and to be real in our relationships. We are encouraged to, Be devoted to tenderly loving your fellow believers as members of one family. Try to outdo yourselves in respect and honor of one another in verse ten. Verse eleven is one I'm struggling with as I deal with physical issues. Be enthusiastic to serve the Lord, keeping your passion toward Him boiling hot! Radiate with the glow of the Holy Spirit and let him fill you with excitement as you serve Him. It is hard to keep my focus on anything right now but I know I must be focused on Him so He will be glorified through all I do and say. I must lean into Paul's words in verse twelve. Let this hope burst forth within you, releasing a continual joy. Don't give up in a time of trouble, but commune with God at all times. The Lord woke me with the song "Gratitude" this morning....

So I throw up my hands
And praise You again and again
'Cause all that I have is a
Hallelujah, hallelujah
And I know it's not much
But I've nothing else fit for a king
Except for a heart singing
Hallelujah, hallelujah

I'm struggling with praising Him with all that is going on. I must continue to find reasons to praise Him because they are with me every day. I woke up to another day of life. I have hope in Him which encourages me to keep putting one foot in front of the other. He is not only my Heavenly Daddy but He is my friend and encourager. He is ready to accept my hallelujah's when I raise them up to Him which is a blessing. He desires my focus to be on Him and empowers me to keep on the right track with Him. I stood on Romans 12:12 yesterday more intentionally and will do so again today. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. I do not like the word patient because thirty plus years ago when I prayed for patience God allowed MS to come into my life. I soon learned a lot of lessons on patience during that time. As we are in this 'waiting room' right now I must allow God to work in and through me so He will be glorified. I must allow Him to be empower me so He will be my focus. Some days are just so much harder than others while on this earth but I must remember I will not always be here but instead with Him for eternity in heaven.

Dear Jesus, Thank You for the blessings of yesterday and the ones ahead today! Thank You for conversations with Pastor Tom and Cheryl, Pastor Loretta, and most of all the way You continue to use Doug to encourage me! Thank You for my short visit with Marion! Thank You for my Momma not being here to fret over all that is happening in our family! Cleanse me so You can fill me so people will see/hear You through my words, actions, attitude, and thoughts. I pray Your empowerment over many going through difficult days. Thank You for being My Continual Joy! Amen.

Romans 12 - "Blessings"

We went to bed at 10:12 last night. I was awake at 12:12, 2:12, 4:12, and then got up at 6:12. That is so weird to think about. The first thing I did when I got up was do a google search on the number 12 in the Bible. The site I went to said it represented completeness or fullness. It gave examples from the Bible to support this. Twelve tribes of Israel, twelve apostles, and the twelve foundation stones in the New Jerusalem were given. It also spoke of how the number twelve can represent God's authority and power. This is read about with the twelve plagues of Egypt and the twelve gates of the New Jerusalem. I went onto read about the number twelve in numerology as being a sign of completion and harmony. It is made up of the two perfect numbers of six and three and is a symbol of balance. The number twelve is a symbol of entirety and perfection. Romans 12:12 is a powerful verse Paul gives us. No matter what we go through on this earth, we can have joy in our spirit because we have hope in Christ. Perfection in our spiritual life comes when we trust God no matter what is happening in our physical, mental, emotional, financial, or relational aspects of life. Paul begins chapter twelve with these words from the New International VersionTherefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. I want to be ...a living sacrice, holy and pleasing to God... The way to fulfill this role in my life is to be follow the words in Romans 12:12. I read this verse in different translations this morning. The Passion Translation reads, Let this hope burst forth within you, releasing a continual joy. Don’t give up in a time of trouble, but commune with God at all times. I love these words! ...continual joy is a state of being I desire to live in. Most times I am successful yet when my focus is pulled away from God it can be a struggle. I find it so interesting that Romans 12 has been part of our weekly challenge for the last few weeks at church. God brought out more insight once again and for that I am grateful. I must admit I wasn't happy to wake every two hours during the night but whatever God wants to use to teach me I will embrace. As my husband says, 'there is always nap time!' I am going to settle into Romans 12:12 with more intention in this 'waiting room' of life. I was grateful when God opened the door yesterday for my appointment with the gynecologist oncologist in Charleston to be moved up a week. I also am grateful for less pain in my back. Yesterday my physical therapist was amazed at how well my back is doing. It's all God! I am grateful for every opportunity He gives me to glorify Him. This morning I am reminded of a song from years ago called "Blessings" and soaking in the knowledge He continues to bless me in this 'waiting room'. These words remind me it is only through God's mercy that I am where I am today.

'Cause what if Your blessings come through raindrops
What if Your healing comes through tears
What if a thousand sleepless nights are what it takes to know You're near
What if trials of this life are Your mercies in disguise

Dear Jesus, Thank You for Your love, grace, and mercy! Thank You for waking me throughout the night at twelve minutes after the hour which took me to Romans 12:12 this morning! Thank You for Doug being so in tune to my needs that he drove me to PT yesterday even though it wasn't the plan! Cleanse me so You can fill me. May people see/hear You through my words, actions, attitude, and thoughts. I pray for many going through difficult days to find Your blessings today. Thank You for being My Continual Joy! Amen.

Psalm 34:18-20; Philippians 4:13 - "Goodness of God"

Yesterday after having my quiet time with God and getting my shower the song "Goodness of God" came on. What a blessing this song is to me! I stood in the living room worshiping God and allowing Him to speak through this song.

Cause all my life You have been faithful
And all my life You have been so, so good
With every breath that I am able
Oh, I will sing of the goodness of God

Yes! God has always been faithful to me. He has been with me through some 'junk' in life no one should have to go through. When some people hear my story, they question God loving me yet allowing things to happen. God gives us free will. Sometimes people do things not of Him even when they are His children. Sometimes people are not His children so they don't understand what they are doing. I am so thankful to be a daughter of the King. I am thankful for the ways He pours His love over me day after day even when I do/say things not of Him. I am thankful for the promises of His Word that encourage me to continue to put one foot in front of the other even when my physical strength is gone. I am thankful for the way He encourages me through these days with this nasty nausea. I am thankful He is right here in this waiting room with Doug and I. I am thankful He gives me peace in the midst of the storms of life. He provides calmness when the 'What if?' questions come into our minds. No one knows how long they will be on this earth. Someone who appears perfectly healthy may die from a heart attack because it was their time to die. An important key is where we will spend eternity. As we live for Him on this earth we have the promise of eternity life with Him. Woo hoo! Sometimes I pray selfishly and ask Him to take me home with Him. He then reminds me He will do so in His time but I still have work to do on this earth. Sometimes I whine about being tired of fighting physical battles and He reminds me I do not have to anything on my own strength (Philippians 4:13). Sometimes I lament over the things people say/do and He reminds me I can't save everyone but I do need to be a right example for them. I was reading this morning in the book of Lamentations. Jeremiah's weariness was great as he struggled with God's judgment over the Israelites. He had to be real so people would see God's strength in him. I need to be as Jeremiah. I need to allow God to work in and through me so people see His strength in me. I need to rest in Him as He restores my physical body. When I do, He will be glorified through me. I am standing on Psalm 34:18 in this waiting room of life. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. I feel like I just want to run away but that is not only not possible but it is not what God desires of me. Instead He wants to be my strength so people will see my hope is in Him.

Dear Jesus, Thank You for the blessings of yesterday and the ones ahead today! Thank You for Your love You pour down over Doug and I every day! Thank You for my church family and friends who check on me, encourage me, etc.! Cleanse me so You can fill me to overflowing with more of You. May people see/hear You through my words, actions, attitude, and thoughts. I pray for so many going through difficult days to allow You to work in and through them. Thank You for being My Bodyguard! Amen.

Psalm 28:7; Joshua 1:9; Philippians 4:6-7 - "There Was Jesus"

I prayed last night and again this morning for all who will be preaching this morning to be empowered by the Holy Spirit. I prayed for them to be encouraged by those around them and not be discouraged as so often happens for pastors. One of the first songs that came on when Doug turned on KLOVE this morning was "There Was Jesus" which blesses me greatly. These words speak volumes to me...

In the waiting, in the searching
In the healing, in the hurting
Like a blessing buried in the broken pieces
Every minute, every moment
Where I've been or where I'm going
Even when I didn't know it
Or couldn't see it
There was Jesus

There are so many times of waiting in life but Jesus is with us every time. He is with us in the 'waiting rooms' as we are searching for answers for our spiritual life. He is there as we wait on doctors reports, test results, etc. He is there when we wait for restoration in relationships. I praise His Holy Name He is always with us. I am thankful He didn't leave me when I walked away from Him years ago. Instead He was waiting with open arms. His love for me never faltered yet grows deeper through all the 'waiting rooms' of life. This 'waiting room' we are in right now is a tough one yet I know He is here with me. I am so thankful He brought Doug into my life to be here to support me. I know I would have survived these days but it would have been so much harder to be alone and to not have my Momma. I am thankful she is not here to fret over all happening in my life. I also am thankful for Pastor David preaching this morning. God had everything all in place knowing I'm struggling physically, mentally, and emotionally. It is hard to concentrate with all the thoughts about the possibility of 'c' again in my life. But I must allow God to be Who He desires and continue to work in and through me. I cannot allow this time to be a distraction to God. Instead I need to lean into His strength so He will be glorified. The words in this song are ones to give such a strong word picture. Like a blessing buried in the broken pieces Yes! I am going to continue to wait on the blessing God has for this time in my life with the broken pieces of my health. His Word is full of promises to be with me in this 'waiting room' and I will stand upon them.

Psalm 28:7 reminds me the joy of the Lord is my strength

Joshua 1:9 reminds me He is with me wherever I go..."Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Philippians 4:6-7 reminds me, Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Dear Jesus, Thank You for the blessings of yesterday with Doug and I enjoying a low-paced day with lots of rest! Thank You for Pastor Dave preaching this morning! Thank You for the way You take care of things before we even know about them! Cleanse me so You can fill me so people will see/hear You through my words, actions, attitude, and thoughts. I pray Your promises over others going through difficult days. Thank You for being My Promise Keeper! Amen.

Psalm 18 - "Confidence"

I started my day off yesterday with the song "Confidence" and it stayed with me throughout the day. The morning was tough with nausea but this song encouraged me to keep putting one foot in front of the other. I am so thankful for Doug being with me in this 'waiting room' of life. He encourages me greatly even through the 'what ifs?' that keep creeping into our minds. God encourages me through Doug's prayers greatly. He encourages me through His Word that is full of promises. The more I lean into Him the more I will receive His peace. The more I seek to be Christ-like the more I will realize heaven on earth. The more I allow Him to love through me the more I will see others accepting His love in their own lives.

So give me faith like Daniel in the lion's den
Give me hope like Moses in the wilderness
Give me a heart like David, Lord be my defense
So I can face my giants with confidence

The part in this song where it asks Lord be my defense is one I focused on yesterday. Sometimes our bodies are tired as they go through trials on this earth but we can never give up allowing God to work in and through us. Psalm 18 is full of encouragement. It begins with David pouring out praises for Who God is in his life. In the VOICE translation he calls Him his source of power. In the New International Version David calls Him his strength...rock... fortress...deliverer..shield...horn of my salvation...stronghold. Verse thirty is a key one to keep my focus on. It begins in the NIVAs for God, his way is perfect:... I keep thinking about the appointment at MUSC not being until November 27. That seems so far away. What if that is too late and things progress? We saw through testing how the things on my ovary grew in the six days between the ultrasound and the CT scan. How much more will they grow before November 27? Am I showing a lack of faith by asking God to move the appointment up? I should stand on these words of His way is perfect knowing He has everything under control but in my humanness I'm struggling. I'm struggling physically with nausea and fatigue. I'm struggling mentally with getting my words and mouth working together. I'm struggling emotionally with many tears falling. I cannot allow these struggles to mess me up spiritually. I need to dig in deeper into my faith and remember the words of Psalm 18:16. It reads in the New International VersionHe reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters. This 'waiting room' seems like deep waters. It seems like I'm bobbing and going under at times but I cannot allow myself to be overtaken by it. Instead I must stand firm in His strength. As I do I will realize Him to a fuller degree and my faith will go deeper than ever before.

Dear Jesus, Thank You for my back pain being less yesterday! Thank You for Doug caring for me so well! Thank You for Your Word that is full of promises such as Psalm 18:16! Cleanse me so You can fill me so people will see/hear You through my words, actions, attitude, and thoughts. I pray Your healing over many going through difficult days. Thank You for being My Source of Power! Amen.
