John 12:27-28 - "Where Are You Christmas?"

Over the last few weeks the song "Where Are You Christmas?" has been going through my mind. This Christmas will be different without my Momma here on earth with us. It also will be different in a happy way with having Doug in my life. Yesterday as I sat in a roomful of widows I saw so much hurt. I saw some tears and I saw some smiles. I know a bit of what they are going through as I had three Christmas' as a widow. You hear some say, 'I will never marry again' and then others like myself that knew marriage was what God had planned for me. Distractions will help with the hurt yet they also will hinder the healing process. They will take away our focus on the true Reason for the Season. The words to this song are ones no one wants to experience yet it is through difficulties in life our faith is taken deeper and our trust in God grows stronger.

Where are you, Christmas?
Why can't I find you?
Why have you gone away?
Where is the laughter
You used to bring me?
Why can't I hear music play?
My world is changing
I'm re-arranging
Does that mean Christmas changes too?

God doesn't change, we do. God doesn't leave us, we wander away. We do not have to go through anything alone. We always have Him to talk to. As we are intentional to focus on Him we will realize His love to a greater extent. We will experience His love as He wipes away the tears that fall. We will experience His love as we allow Him to use our hurts for His glory. Last night in Bible study we talked about the importance of our prayers when facing difficulties. We are tempted to pray, 'Father, save me from this hour' yet we need to pray 'Father, glorify Your name' (John 12:27-28). Jesus' words are ones we need to follow. We need to see the example He put before us on how to live as God desires of us. These verses read in The Passion Translation“Even though I am torn within, and my soul is in turmoil, I will not ask the Father to rescue me from this hour of trial. For I have come to fulfill my purpose —to offer myself to God. So, Father, bring glory to your name!” God has a purpose for each one of us. As we fulfill that purpose we will realize His love more than ever before.

Dear Jesus, Thank You for Vonna who leads the widows group and for the opportunity to pray over the group yesterday! Thank You for Your Word that reminds me You are always with me! Thank You for bringing Doug into my life at the perfect time! Lord, I pray I will be more intentional in living out Your purpose for me so You will be glorified through me. Cleanse me so people will see/hear You through my words, actions, attitude, and thoughts. I pray Your strength over many going through difficulties. My sisters Linda, Sally, and Mary; my brother Richard; Ben and Colleen; Pete and Delores; Steve; Doug's sister Jackie; Cait; Rhonda; Mike; Norma Hall; Jack and Paula; Beth; Sharon Sebolt and her parents; some young ladies with anxiety; Brooklyn; April; families in turmoil; Gay and Doug; Sherry; and many others. I also pray healing prayers over many dealing with ‘c’ and/or going through treatments…Chrissy’s cousin; Mike's sister; Shirley Jones; Little Judson; a young girl in our community; Audrey; Mr Mullet; Marybeth's friend; David; Dave and Carol with his treatments; Dan; and Ray. I pray for: the Long family; Becky; Baby Sabre and her family; Debbie and her family; Mr. John; Darrell; Mallory and Baby Zion; Sandra; and Russ. Thank You for continued healing for Pastor Tommy and Pam! Thank You for being My Purpose! Amen.

Psalm 34:18-20 - "This Is Christmas"

Every time I turn around there is a reminder of my dear Momma. She loved Christmas and always strived to make it as good as possible for everyone around her. My love for baking Christmas cookies comes from watching her as I grew up. She put in many hours making cut-out cookies and then decorating them. I remember one year when I was in grade school of her making each one of the children a santa claus cookie. In the many years I made fifty dozen cookies to share she helped in my kitchen. Another tradition she instilled in me was sending Christmas cards. As I was finishing up making cards Doug asked me if I always did them. I shared with him how last year Momma didn't have the money to do cards and I knew it was breaking her heart. I bought the cards and stamps so she could send them out instead of doing my own. Her emotions when I told her was priceless. Another tradition she passed down was having people around her table for Christmas dinner. It didn't matter if it were a crowd or just a couple as long as there were people. I am thankful for her friend Wanda who spent many times around her table. When I moved to South Carolina, holiday meals were different but I always try to include people around my table especially if they have no family around. Christmas music was always playing in the house when I was growing up and continues to be played today. Our Christmas tree is decorated with meaningful ornaments and topped with an angel made out of one of my Grandma's hankies. Icicles or tinsel are the last thing to be put on just as my Momma did on her trees. Presents under the tree became fewer as Momma aged but they were important to her. In my Daddy's last years I would pick up little gifts for 'the girls' of the family for him to give just from him. My parents taught me so much in life with sharing being on the top of the list. The most important thing they taught me was a saying I frequently say this time of year. It is not about the presents under the tree but about His presence in our life. They taught me the true meaning of Christmas is not just for one day a year or one season but it needs to be three hundred and sixty five days a year. I love when people share stories of how God has been so close to them in difficult times. I also love when people share how my parents blessed them over the years. They were so good at blessing others through the Lord. We did not always have much materially but we sure were blessed by God in so many ways. When I received this picture from Cheryl of Momma's Christmas cactus blooming, I was so blessed. Momma would call me the first day a bloom started so excited that it would be in bloom for Christmas. (One thing I did not inherit from her was keeping plants alive...lol.) As I reflect this morning on all the things I learned from her and my Daddy i am reminded of David's words of Psalm 34:18 that encourage me to remember the Lord is always with me. He has taken my tears, dried them, and given me the strength to continue on through many difficult days. I am also blessed by verses nineteen and twenty in The Passion TranslationEven when bad things happen to the good and godly ones, the Lord will save them and not let them be defeated by what they face. God will be your bodyguard to protect you when trouble is near. Not one bone will be broken. I was reminded yesterday in a conversation about how God knows the outcome of December 15. No matter what lies ahead He already has things taken care of. Praise His Holy Name! I have the song "This Is Christmas?" on my mind this morning as I reflect on Christmas' in the past and feeling very blessed in knowing the real Reason for The Season!

What is Christmas?
If there never was a Savior wrapped in a manger
What is Christmas without Christ?

Dear Jesus, Thank You for the opportunities You gave me yesterday to love with Your love! Thank You for the ones ahead today! Thank You for an impromptu conversation in Dollar Tree with a lady going through some difficult times! May she seek Your strength. Thank You for Doug taking Jack to Charleston and for his good report! Cleanse me so You can fill me so people will see/hear You through my words, actions, attitude, and thoughts. I pray Psalm 34:18 over many going through difficult days. Thank You for being My Reason For The Season! Amen.

Psalm 105 - "The More I Seek You"

The Lord took me to Psalm 105 this morning. David wrote this Psalm as a praise to the Lord. It reminds us of what the Lord did for the Israelites as they traveled through the wilderness. Sometimes life seems like a wilderness. There are people and circumstances the enemy uses to try to knock down our faith. Those same people and circumstances can be used by God to strengthen our faith. David writes of the blessings that came down upon the Israelites over the years they struggled. Blessings happen in both 'good' days and 'tough' days. Sometimes we have to look for them a little harder than others but they are always there. Yesterday was a day full of blessings with much being accomplished. I was starting to fret over all that needs done before my surgery. God blessed me yesterday with getting a couple things off my list. Several years ago He clearly told me to quit using lists. I did not think I would survive but trusted Him. I had lists for my lists and many times would not go to bed at night if there was even just one thing left unaccomplished. In another conversation with God I asked Him if it were ok for me to have a list for special circumstances such as an event at church. Thankfully He blessed me with, 'Yes, Daughter.' I knew my upcoming surgery was a special circumstance so yesterday morning I wrote out my list. It has two parts. Church and home. After writing my list I prayed for a gift idea and He not only provided the idea but I had made extra a few months back so was very happy to already have them made. Later in the day when I found out how many I needed I was once again blessed with having enough for the project. Woo hoo, God! After this experience and making breakfast for Doug and I we went for a walk and once again were blessed by the beautiful weather. The sun shining down reminded me of the Son shining down on us. The first seven verses of Psalm 105 encourage us to praise Him for all He has done for us. It encourages us to keep our focus on Him. Sometimes when we go through a time of wilderness we lose our focus. Life can become overwhelming in a negative way yet we need to allow Him to overwhelm us with His love in a positive way. We need to continue to lean into His strength in such times. Matthew Henry wrote of verse seven, Seek to have his favour to eternity, therefore continue seeking it while living in this world; for he will not only be found, but he will reward those that diligently seek him. If we want to spend eternity with Him, we must live for Him while on this earth. We must be diligent in loving Him so He can love through us. I love verse three which tells us to be joyful no matter what is happening in life. How does that work when we lose a loved one? How can we be joyful when we go through health issues? How can there be joy when we are hurt by people's words and/or actions? The only way it works is to stay focused on Him so He can work in and through us. My heart is breaking for so many people going through 'tough' days. Some are going through them because of 'bad' decisions they made while others are just because of circumstances of life. My prayer for not only myself but for all is for them to live out verse four in The Passion Translation. Seek more of His strength! Seek more of Him! Let's always be seeking the light of His face. I have the song "The More I Seek You" going through my mind this morning and am praying for this to be my mantra not only in the day ahead but for every day of my life on this earth.

The more I seek you
The more I find you
The more I find you
The more I love you

Dear Jesus, Thank You for the blessings of yesterday with all that was accomplished! Thank You for shining down upon Doug and I as we went for a morning walk, had an afternoon nap, and got the truck cover on! Thank You for my church board who support me so well! Thank You for Your Word that encourages me to, Seek more of His strength! Seek more of Him! Let's always be seeking the light of His face. Cleanse me so You can fill me so people will see/hear You through my words, actions, attitude, and thoughts so I can seek You more. I pray for many going through difficult days to seek You. John; Darrell; Mallory and Baby Zion; and Russ. Thank You for continued healing for Pastor Tommy and Pam! Thank You for being The One I Seek! Amen.

Philippians 4 - "Walk With Jesus"

I woke up this morning thinking my surgery is only eleven days away. There is so much to get accomplished in those eleven days. Some of it are 'musts' and others are 'wants.' Over these next eleven days I do not want to get caught up in the tasks at hand and miss what the Lord has for me. I also do not want to allow the enemy any open door to cause issues. I am reminded of Paul's words in Philippians 4:6-7. They read in The Passion TranslationDon’t be pulled in different directions or worried about a thing. Be saturated in prayer throughout each day, offering your faith-filled requests before God with overflowing gratitude. Tell him every detail of your life, then God’s wonderful peace that transcends human understanding, will guard your heart and mind through Jesus Christ. Paul's direction is quite clear. Don't worry. Pray about everything with gratitude. Allow God to pour out His peace upon you. It sounds pretty easy but in our humanness it can be difficult. This picture of Doug and I was taken almost nine months ago when he came down to visit. There has been so much happen In the months since it was taken. We got married, both of us sold properties, my Momma left this earth, we bought a pick-up and a cabin...just to name a few. My health issues with a double whammy of a herniated disc and going to have a hysterectomy adds onto the list. Just meshing our lives together has been both a joy and at times trying. Prior to these verses in verse four it reads, Be cheerful with joyous celebration in every season of life. Let your joy overflow! Having a cheerful attitude can be a challenge yet when we allow God to be in control it is doable no matter what our circumstances. The result of living out the words of Paul are found in verse thirteen. I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength. This is not just in the physical sense but in the mental, emotional, financial, professional, and every aspect of life. God desires us to be successful in life. He desires us to have the goal of eternal life with Him. He gives us His Word to read and ponder upon as our guidebook for life. He encourages us through people, music, Scripture, etc. so we do not have to do life on our own. Praise His Holy Name! This morning the song "Walk With Jesus" is on my mind. These words remind me to keep my focus on Him while on this earth so I can live with Him for eternity.

I'm gonna live the way He says to live
Do what He says to do
You can choose whatever road you choose
But I'm gonna love the way He says to love
Trust the way He says to trust
This world alone will never be enough
So I'm gonna walk with Jesus

Dear Jesus, Thank You for the blessings of yesterday with Sunday School, church, lunch with my church family, seeing the nativity display with Doug and then the parade! Thank You for Your strength to not just get through the day but to glorify You in the process! Cleanse me so You can fill me so people will see/hear You through my words, actions, attitude, and thoughts. I pray Your strength over many going through difficult days. John; Darrell; Mallory and Baby Zion; and Russ. Thank You for continued healing for Pastor Tommy and Pam! Thank You for being My Eternity Goal! Amen.

Hebrews 10:23-25 - "The Hope of Christmas"

Last night there were thousands of people at the Holiday Boat Parade even with the misty rain. Yesterday afternoon watching the Alabame/Georgia football game the stadium was packed. This time of year many times when you go into a store it is packed. It saddens me to think of how many pastors will stand in the pulpit today to empty pews. The saying "Jesus Is The Reason For The Season" doesn't seem to mean much to so many people. There will be the 'C & E' people who will go to church on Christmas but if we aren't regular in church attendance we miss out so much. Paul's words in Hebrews 11:23-25 read in the New International Version:

Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

Hope is today's theme for this first Sunday of Advent. He is the Hope we find on this earth so we can live with Him for eternity. There are so many people who feel hopeless yet Jesus came to this earth so we can have hope. I know you do not have to go to church to have Jesus but I also know when we fellowship with one another, receive teaching from His Word, join with others praying together, etc., our faith is renewed and goes deeper. The parade, football game, stores, etc. that are packed cannot give us what we need. They give temporary enjoyment but Jesus gives permanent enjoyment. They give satisfaction for a moment but Jesus gives total satisfaction for all time. We need to have balance in our life. Jesus wants us to enjoy life and experience such things as a football game, parade, shopping, etc. but He also wants us to be living focused on Him so we can truly know Him as our Hope. We all need to get better at sharing the hope of Him with others. We need to encourage one another to love with His love so more people will have the goal of eternity with Him. Matthew Henry wrote of these verses:

Believers are to consider how they can be of service to each other, especially stirring up each other to the more vigorous and abundant exercise of love, and the practice of good works. The communion of saints is a great help and privilege, and a means of steadfastness and perseverance.

If we desire to have hope in Him, we must have the desire to love with His love. We must be willing to see things as He sees them and react with His attitude. This is sometimes hard in our humanness but it is not impossible to do. This Christmas season I desire to have my focus totally on Him so the days ahead will be filled with His hope. I desire to share His love more intentionally so others can receive His hope. I am reminded this morning of a song Matthew West sings called, "The Hope of Christmas"...

You're still the hope of Christmas
You're still the light when the world looks dark
You're still the hope of Christmas
And You're still the hope of my heart

Dear Jesus, Thank You for the blessings of yesterday and the ones ahead today! Thank You for the memories Doug and I made yesterday! Thank You for the privilege to pray for pastors before going to bed, during the night, and again this morning! Cleanse me so You can fill me so people will see/hear You through my words, actions, attitude, and thoughts. I pray Your hope over many going through difficult days. John; Darrell; Mallory and Baby Zion; and Russ. Thank You for continued healing for Pastor Tommy and Pam! Thank You for being My Hope! Amen.

Deuteronomy; Proverbs 3:5-6 - "Walk With Jesus"

Yesterday was full of blessings from God. Having our tire fixed quickly when we found a screw in it turned a 'bad' situation into a blessed one. Finding a new restaurant to have breakfast was an adventure as Doug and I shared a variety of items. We love to find little 'hole in the wall' type places and this one did not disappoint one bit. Afterward we picked up some things needed at the cabin and stopped to see Pastor Libby who is working on renovating their new church building. I loved hearing of their plans as she gave us a tour. As we walked through it I had flashbacks of finishing up our building after Doc left this earth. Those were tough days in so many ways with so many obstacles. I prayed for the Batesburg congregation to grow stronger when the obstacles come before them. One of my favorite things for Doug and I to do is to check out little shops but especially when we find antique ones. Yesterday's find was so much fun as we walked through one full of all kinds of things. I love when we like the same things and have a vision on where we could put them. Yesterday's purchase of a frog bell to put on the outside of the barn was one of my favs. My Momma had an old frog planter that moved with us throughout my life. I see similar ones in shops from time to time but are too expensive. This frog bell will remind me of my Momma every time I see it. After we went back to the cabin, ate lunch, and rested we put together a microwave cart we brought with us. That activity blessed me in abundance as we work so well together as we do such things. Doug helping me wash my hair was another blessing in the day. Last night's District Christmas dinner was so encouraging as people spoke life over me. I am so grateful for the prayers going up on my behalf. The good food and fellowship were once again blessings for me. Sometimes I feel like I need to pinch myself with all the ways God blesses me. Doug and I having Advent devotions before falling asleep was the 'icing on the cake' for a great day. This morning God has me pondering on the story of the Israelites in the wilderness. Many times in my life I have felt like I was in the wilderness but I never went through all they endured. As I reflect back on their story in the book of Deuteronomy I wonder who encouraged them? Did they become discouraged? Did they see God working in their story? Did they have times they wanted to just give up on their journey? Life was challenging for them yet they continued making the trip as God directed. I am sure some grumbled because they were human just like us. Thankfully God is always there to encourage us and get us on the right track. One of the times I was awake during the night He brought Proverbs 3:5-6 to my mind. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your path straight. Trust is key for all of us. Allowing Him to be in control of our life is another key aspect we should never lose. As we stay focused on Him we will be blessed with the knowledge He loves us and is there with open arms even when we fail. I am reminded this morning of a song Consumed By Fire sings called "Walk With Jesus"...

I'm gonna live the way He says to live
Do what He says to do
You can choose whatever road you choose
But I'm gonna love the way He says to love
Trust the way He says to trust
This world alone will never be enough
So I'm gonna walk with Jesus

Dear Jesus, Thank You for all the blessings You poured out over Doug and I yesterday and the ones ahead today! I pray for Pastor Libby and the Batesburg congregation as they renovate their new building. Thank You for all who spoke life over me last night at the District Christmas dinner! Cleanse me so You can fill me so people will see/hear You through my words, actions, attitude, and thoughts in the day ahead. I pray Your love over those going through difficult days. John; Darrell; Mallory and Baby Zion; and Russ. Thank You for continued healing for Pastor Tommy and Pam! Thank You for being My Love! Amen.

Mark 12:29-31 - "Love God, Love People"

The sun shining down on our drive to the cabin yesterday felt so good coming in the windows. It reminded me the Son was shining down on us too. God blesses us in abundance every day. He wakes us with another day of life ahead. He provides great conversations where Doug and I not only plan things but we learn more about one another. This morning's conversation about our grandparents and great grandparents was special. Our conversation about people we grew up with and the things we did was priceless. Since moving to South Carolina I have been so blessed by the cotton fields. It was something I had never experienced before which makes it even more special. Growing up and dreaming of going to the beach is a fond memory but even more so with living so close to the ocean. Every time we come to the cabin and the cotton fields are in bloom I am in awe. God created cotton which in turn is used to make much of our clothing. It is so cool to think about. This morning I wondered if cotton is in the Bible. I read this on one website:

  • Cotton, better known as linen in the Bible, carries a positive meaning, and it’s believed to represent spiritual awakening. It’s also deemed a symbol of blessings sent from the Divine. In several verses in the Bible, cotton is associated with purity and God’s laws.

After reading this it makes me realize why seeing the cotton fields is so special for me. They are a true blessing from God. From this day forward when I see the cotton fields I will remember the blessings of a life lived following His laws. This morning I am praying to be more intentional in living out Mark 12:29-31. Jesus answered the question on what is the most important command with naming two commands. Love God and love others. You cannot love others in the fullest manner without loving God. You also cannot love God and not have the desire in your heart to love others. Sometimes people are difficult to like their actions, words, etc. But when we follow God's command we still need to love them. I am sure there are times God shakes His head at me for my actions, words, etc. yet He never stops loving me. Woo hoo! This morning I have the song "Love God, Love People" that Danny Gokey sings...

Love God and love people (People)
We're living in a world that keeps breakin'
But if we want to find a way to change it
It all comes down to this
Love God and love people

Dear Jesus, Thank You for the revelation You gave me yesterday with my last sermon before surgery! Thank You for our safe travels to the cabin and for the cotton fields You spoke through! Thank You for conversations with Doug that make me love him even more than before! Thank You for encouraging me to push through for my visit with Marion yesterday when I wasn't feeling the best! What a blessing to be there to call bingo for those who did not go on the outing. You bless me in abundance every day and I am so grateful for each blessing. Cleanse me so You can fill me. May people see/hear You through my words, actions, attitude, and thoughts. I pray Your love over many going through difficult days. John; Darrell; Mallory and Baby Zion; and Russ. Thank You for continued healing for Pastor Tommy and Pam! Thank You for being My Love! Amen.
