II Samuel 12; Revelation 21:4 - Accidental Death of a Child

What words can be said to someone who has just went through a tragic death of a child?
What possibly can be said that will comfort someone in this situation?
How can you explain why God would take a child?

No words will wipe away the hurt.  Even if we've been through the death of our own child we still shouldn't say, "I know what you're going through" because every situation is different.  Yes, the pain will diminish but it will never go away.  There will always be a void after the death of a loved one.

We can learn from David's loss of a child in the story found in II Samuel 12.
  • First of all, David accepted the child's death.  David also didn't pull away from the Lord but instead drew closer to Him.  Verse 20 reads, "Then David got up from the ground. After he had washed, put on lotions and changed his clothes, he went into the house of the Lord and worshiped. Then he went to his own house, and at his request they served him food, and he ate."  He had confidence in the fact that the Lord was going to see him through this trial.  This act on David's part gave him freedom in the grieving process.
  • Secondly, David knew he would see his child again.  The end part of verse 23 reads, "...I will go to him, but he will not return to me.”  That knowledge gave David comfort.
I am praying Revelation 21:4 over this family this morning...“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”  When I first found out there was a situation to pray for, I didn't know what the situation was but the Lord kept bringing back to "pray for peace for all involved" so that's how I prayed.  Finding out the tragic situation and the accident involved a family member made me realize why the Lord had me praying that way.

Dear Jesus,
Thank You for being with this family as they continue to deal with the after effects of this accident.  Thank You for giving them wisdom in decisions.  Thank You for giving them Your love for one another as they support each other.  That You for enabling them to get through these tough days leaning upon Your strength.  Lord, there are many questions of "why" such things occur.  We may never know the answer but I pray for this family to continue to seek You.  Thank You Lord for being Their Strength.  Amen.
